Spear
The spear is traditionally made of waxwood (Grossy or Chinese Privet) the latin name of this plant is Ligustrum Lucidum (witte wasboom of liguster). This wood is flexible and strong and very smooth to the touch, ideal for handling a spear. Length should be between 175 and 215 cm. Bottom end of the spear is thicker (around 3 cm) than the top (2 cm). You can get this wood or the whole spear from martial art shops. On top there should be a spearhead with some red horsehair in its base.
For learning the spear form the staff will do if you do not want to buy a waxwood stick. It might be a good idea to tape one end of the staff to indicate the spearhead. You can also look for a straight branch of another tree and strip away the bark.
Jin wants for himself a willow wood stick of 175 cm long without the metal spearhead, other sources talk about an individual length from the ground to your completely raised middle finger.
More information on the spear can be found on www.jadedragon.com/martarts/spear1.html
